John Coates was 21 when he was mustered into the 2nd U S Sharpshooters. He was badly wounded in the back at the Battle of Antietam on Sept 17, 1862. He was sent to the Fort Schuyler Hospital in New York City to recover. It was deemed he would not be able to return to service. He was discharged for disability on Feb 18, 1863.
