
William G Coen enlisted from Morristown in Rice County, Mn. He was born in Comstock, Ohio but was now farming in Minnesota when the war began. The 21 year old farmer stood 5' 7 1/4" tall, had a light complexion, hazel colored eyes and light brown hair. He fought at the Seven Days Battle as well as Fredericksburg on May 3, 1863. He was wounded at the battles of Antietam on Dec 13, 1862 and again at Gettysburg on July 2nd, 1863. He recovered and was mustered out with the regiment on May 5, 1864. In 1909 he was living in Huffman, Nebraska. The 1910 roster of the veterans of the First lists him as residing in Sprague, Nebraska. The 1917 roster of veterans of the First Minnesota lists William as living in Sargeant, Nebraska, at the time. He died at his home in Sargent on Feb 7, 1933.
