Rudolph Barnes served for three years in Company F of the First Minnesota. He was 24 when he was mustered into service on April 29, 1861. He was shot in the hand on Sept 17, 1862, at the Battle of Antietam. He was mustered out with the remnants of the unit on May 5, 1864.

The 1910 and 1917 rosters of the veterans of the First listed him as living in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois. Rudolph died there on May 28, 1917.
