James Shepley enlisted on April 29, 1861. He was made a sergeant in Company E. The 26 year old was promoted to 2nd lieutenant on Oct 22, 1861. At Antietam he had a piece of rail thrown against his ankles by a shell, which badly bruised them. On July 19, 1862, he was promoted to 1st lieutenant in Company G. He resigned on Jan 13, 1863.

In a letter to Mathew Marvin, after the war, William Lochren gave a status report on some of the officers. Of Shepley he wrote, "2nd Lt James H Shepley - Married - was in Vet Reserve Corps in 1866. Have not heard from him since."

James died in Washington DC on June 14, 1879. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, South Section, Site 1403SH, in Arlington, VA.
