Ephraim F Leighton was born in Maine. He was living in St Anthony, one of the oldest settlements in Minnesota, at the outbreak of the war. He was 27 years old. At the battle of Antetam, this member of Company E received a gun shot wound to his right ankle. Though there is no record of it he was probably discharged for disability a few months later, as were many of the men wounded in that battle. He next shows up as being mustered, as a private, into the 11th Minnesota Infantry on Aug 24, 1864. He was mustered out with that unit in Gallatin, Tenn on May 29, 1865. After the war he returned to the Minneapolis area. In 1872, William Lochren noted that Ephraim was working as a lumberman in Minneapolis and was not married. As a veteran he collected a pension for his wartime injury. He joined the George N Morgan GAR Post #4 on Jan 11, 1884. He died in Minneapolis on July 24, 1900.
