John was born in South Lawrence, New York on Apr 6, 1839. When he enlisted in Company E, on May 23, 1861, he was 22 years old, stood 5'9" tall, had blue eyes and was employed as a lumberman (lumberjack). He was wounded at the regiment's first battle, Bull Run. At the Battle of Antietam he was shot in the thigh. He was captured by the Confederates but later released, on Oct 11, 1862. He was discharged for disability on March 3, 1863.

In 1872, William Lochren noted that John was married and living in Minneapolis and working as a lumberman. On May 16, 1884, he joined the George N Morgan GAR Post #4. The 1910 & 1917 rosters of the veterans of the First Minnesota list him living at 1001 2nd St in Minneapolis.

John's wife perdeceased him. The 1926 roster of the veterans records that he was living at 1337 Adams St NE in Minneapolis under the care of a J M Hoy. There, He died of pneumonia on October 16, 1928. He was 91 years old.
