Peter enlisted at the age of 23. He stood 5' 6" tall. He had a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He enrolled at Lake City on Feb 11, 1862, and apparently mustered into service at Ft Snelling later that same day. He served in Company H and was wounded at the battle of Antietam later that year.

When the First was mustered out of service Peter still had time left on his three year enlistment. He was transferred to Company B of the First Battalion to finish out his time. Peter was captured at the battle at Reams Station, Va, on Aug 25, 1864. He died of diarrhea on Dec 12, 1864 while in prison at Salisbury, N Carolina,.
