Earl P Owen was 25 at the time he was mustered into Company H on October 11, 1861. He was wounded at Bull Run. At Antietam he was wounded again. It was a slight wound to the forearm caused by a minnie ball. Earl was discharged for disability on March 21, 1863.

In short order he was back in the service. On August 17, 1863, he joined Company B of Hatch's Battalion of Independent Cavalry. During his service, he was first promoted to corporal and then to sergeant. He was discharged on June 9, 1866.
