Jeremiah Helmer was born in New York. He was just nineteen when he was mustered into Company H of the First Minnesota on April 29, 1861. He was known as Henry to his comrades. He was wounded twice, the first time at Bull Run. At the battle at Antietam he was slightly wounded in the leg. Henry was discharged for disability on February 20, 1863.
