William Everts enlisted at the age of 23. On April 29, 1861 he was mustered into Company H of the First Minnesota Infantry. He was slightly wounded in the leg at Antietam. He knew all the boys from Shakopee and was also a friend of Steve & Harrison Lyons. On October 24, 1862, William transfered to the U S Cavalry.
