George W Patten was born in Maine and came to Anoka in Anoka County, Minnesota in 1859. He was 20 when he enlisted. On May 21, 1861 he was mustered into Company D. In 1862, he received gunshot wounds at the battles at both Fair Oaks and Antietam. One of these were a gun shot wound to his left hip. He was discharged for disability on Apr 7, 1863.

The 1883 List of Pensioners states that he was living in the town of Spencer in Isanti County and recieving a pension for his wartime wound. In 1910 he was living in Princeton in Mille Lacs County, Mn. The 1917 roster of the surviving veterans of the First Minnesota lists his residence as having changed to Zephyrhills, Florida.

He applied for admission to the Minnesota Soldier's Home on Oct 17, 1918. He stated that his wife was living in Princeton, but he couldn't remember the date of their marriage. They had four children, George F, Earnest C, Lottie and Maurice all of whom were living also living in Princeton at the time. He also stated that he had lived at the Soldier's Home in Johnson City, Tenn for awhile. His application was withdrawn when the Minnesota Home was able to secure a slightly larger monthly pension, which then allowed him to live at home with his wife.

George moved back to his farm in Spencer and lived the last four years of his life there. He died in Spencer, on January 27, 1922.
