Ervin Lawrence joined Company D on April 29, 1861. He was 21 when he went off to war. He was slightly wounded at Antietam when he was shot in the side. At one point during the battle the men were positioned behind a rail fence. As he and the other men of the regiment were firing away. he was startled when a bullet hit him in the side. Ed Walker to his left heard him give a surprise "Oh!" when it happened. He dropped his hands to his side and, after a moment, dropped his rifle and worked his way back to the rear and safety. After the battle was over, he was sent to a hospital in Baltimore to recover. At Gettysburg, on July 2, 1863, he was wounded again, This time though, the wound was too much for him. He hung on for five days but death came on July 7th. He is buried in the Gettysburg National Cemetery, Minnesota Section (D), Grave #7.
