
John Henry Haner was born in Germany on April 2, 1840. Henry, as he was known, came to Minnesota in 1858. He enlisted in his home town of Monticello in Wright County, Minnesota in April of 1861. On May 21st he was mustered in to Company D. He was 21 years old though records at the time list his age as 23. John was wounded on Sept 17, 1861, at Antietam. A bullet entered his side and exited near his backbone. He was sent to the hospital to recover, but was discharged for disability on December 2, 1862. He married in 1868, in Minneapolis. He and his wife settled in Middleville, near Monticello. They raised 8 children. Henry suffered chroic back pain as a result of his war injury. He moved into the Minnesota Soldiers Home in Minneapolis on Aug 14, 1907. His wife was living with one of their children in Middleville at the time. He was discharged on Aug 15, 1908.
