Leonard B Carter enlisted at the age of 26. He enlisted from Clearwater in Wright County. He became a part of Company D, when mustered in on May 22, 1861. He was wounded at Antietam. He was severely wounded in the hip at Bristow Station. Ed Walker, also a member of Co D, mentionCarter in a letter to a friend dated Nov 5, 1863. In it he described the Battle at Bristoe Station and Carter. "Our Regt had been very lucky in the fight loosing only 1 killed and 18 wounded, 2 wounded in our Company - one of them [Leonard Carter] was badly wounded on the skirmish line but made his way back to the Rail Road and fired eighteen shots at the Rebs before leaving the field. He had just returned to the Company having been wounded at Antietem. His wound will lay him up for the rest of his time." Carter was listed on the company muster rolls as "absent sick" when the regiment was mustered out at Fort Snelling on May 5, 1864. The 1900 US census lists a Leonard B carter as farming in the Lake Precinct in Douglas County, Oregon. The 1910 roster of the veterans of the First Minnesota states that he had died by that time but no details are given. However, the 1910 US Census for Florence Precinct in Lane, Oregon lists Civil War veteran Leonard B Carter as a retired farmer who was living on the farm he owned. This is presumed to be the same man and we presume he died in Oregon. Sources: Letter from Ed Walker to Edwin Knight, Nov 5, 1863, Wayne Jorgenson collection.
