One of the less noble service records amongst the men of the First Minnesota belongs to Isaac Staats. He was 25 when he enlisted on May 22, 1861. He stood 6' 1 1/2" tall. He had fair skin, hazel colored eyes and dark hair. He was from Stillwater in Washington County but was not placed in Company B with other men from the area. He and a few others from there were placed in Company C. He was wounded at Antietam. He was sent to the US General Hospital at Broad & Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia (Ward K). Records state that he deserted while he was absent sick from the regiment during the winter of 1862 - 1863.. He was born in Jackson Co, Virginia and it may be that Staats could not bring himself to fight in his native state against his fellow Virginians.
