German born Nicholas Mathias (Matheis) was 20 when he became a private in Company A of the First Minnesota. The enrolling clerk spelled his name "Matheis. Little is known about his service. He was slightly wounded at Antietam and Savage Station. He was mustered out with the regiment on May 5, 1864.

The 1870 US census indicated that he and his wife, Anna, were living in St Paul with their two chldren, Clara and Gustav. Nicholas was working as an upholsterer.

The 1910 roster of the surviving veterans reported that he had died in 1883. He would have then been 42 years old at the time of his death.
