
John volunteered and was mustered into service on May 22, 1861. He was 24 years old. He born in Germany but was living in St Paul when the war began. He was present for all the major battles that the First fought in. He reenlisted in the First Battalion and was promoted to corporal and later sergeant. He was captured at Petersburg spending 8 months as a prisoner of war. He was first sent to Andersonville. He was then sent to a smaller POW camp at Millen, Georgia on Oct, 31, 1864. He was part of a prisoner exchange done in April, 1865. He rejoined the regiment in early May 1865, and, at some time, was promoted to sergeant.
